During the Kargil War of 1999, Capt Nayyar was posted to the 17th Battalion of the Jat Regiment. The conflict, marked by daring mountain warfare and fierce battles in high-altitude terrains, tested the limits of Indian soldiers. Capt Nayyar distinguished himself in the capture of Tololing Heights, one of the most strategic and fiercely contested positions.

Despite facing heavy enemy fire and sustained injury, Capt Anuj Nayyar led his troops courageously and destroyed several enemy bunkers and fortifications, clearing the path for the Indian Army forces to advance. His leadership and heroism were pivotal in the success of this operation, directly contributing to India’s victory in the Kargil War.
