Lieutenant Kiran Shekhawat holds a special place in the history of the Indian Navy as the first woman officer who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the nation. Her duties involved flying over vast oceans, monitoring activities, and contributing to India’s security from the sky — a demanding and high-responsibility role.
On March 24, 2015, tragedy struck when the Dornier aircraft she was aboard crashed into the Arabian Sea near Goa. Lieutenant Kiran Shekhawat lost her life during this mission at just 26 years old. Her death was felt deeply across the Indian Navy and the nation, marking a poignant moment as the first female officer in the Navy to die on active duty. Her sacrifice highlighted the risks and bravery that women officers continually face in the armed forces.
