Step-by-Step Guide to Join the National Defence Academy (NDA)

Check your eligibility
  • Age: Must be between 16.5 to 19.5 years.
  • Education: For Army Wing – passed or appearing in 12th; for Air Force/Navy Wings – 12th with Physics, Chemistry, Maths.
  • Nationality: Indian citizen (with some exceptions for neighbouring countries).
  • Unmarried male and female candidates can apply.
  • Meet specified physical and medical standards.
Apply Online
  • Visit the official UPSC website.
  • Complete the One-Time Registration (OTR).
  • Fill out the NDA application form with required documents, fees, and preferences.
  • Double-check all details before final submission.
Prepare for the Written Examination
  • The exam has two papers: Mathematics (300 marks) and General Ability Test (GAT, 600 marks).
  • GAT covers English, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Affairs.
  • The exam is conducted twice a year, usually in April and September.
Clear the Written Exam

SSB INTERVIEW
  • Lasts 5 days and assesses leadership, personality, and intelligence.

  • Stage 2: Group Testing Officer tasks, Psychological tests, and Personal Interview.
Medical Examination
  • Comprehensive medical check to ensure all physical standards are met.
  • Height, weight, eyesight, general health, etc., are checked.
Final Merit list
  • UPSC prepares the list based on written exam marks and SSB interview performance, not just clearing medicals.
  • Admission is granted according to merit and available vacancies.
Join NDA
  • Shortlisted candidates receive the joining instructions.
  • Training starts at NDA, Khadakwasla, Pune, followed by specialised training in the respective defence academies.
